April 15th, 1993 was Ed Schmanski’s birthday. His
sister Jennifer was visiting him from out of town. He and his sister were
driving south on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to a restaurant to celebrate
the birthday. As they passed the muffler shop, they saw a police vehicle
turning in the parking lot. The vehicle was white with a stripe going down its
side. This detail would have been very difficult to see from the positions of
the cars, at night and in heavy rain. The yellow stripe was probably suggested
to Schmanski by the interviewer.
Jennifer made the comment that he was not hiding very well, and Ed checked his radar detector and found the officer was not running radar. The fact that the officer was turning in the parking lot would indicate that he had left the driveway for some reason and then returned to his monitoring activities.
Ed Schmanski testified at the trial of Michael Chapel,
Jennifer lived out of town and did not testify.
