Michael Chapel’s raincoat was seized from the trunk of his police unit when a search warrant was executed on the night of his arrest. It was sent to the GBI Crime Lab, and on July 7th, 1993, Serologist Jennifer Wilson of that organization tested the raincoat for blood of human origin. The raincoat was never tested for DNA. According to Danny Porter, that would have destroyed the garment. According to the Georgia Supreme Court it was because the garment had been contaminated at the GBI Crime Lab.

Mrs. Wilson supposedly tested the entire garment and found 7 minute, spots of blood of human origin on the raincoat, and these she surrounded with a blue circle in ink on the garment. On this photograph of the raincoat, 2 are located at grid F5, 1 is located on border of the F6 and G6 grids, 1 is located near the collar at grid H2. One is under the flap at grid I5 one is on the left sleeve at grid Q4, and finally 1 spot that cannot be seen under the right sleeve. These last 2 spots would indicate that Jennifer Wilson did test the entire garment.
